Two Cool Things To Do With Your AppleTV

Posted on September 30, 2012 by Same3Guys in Blog

Hey AppleTV owners. Here is a quick post to make you aware of a couple of recent enhancements to your AppleTV. I just discovered them last night and wanted to share the love.

First up, make sure you are running the latest ATV software. You do this by selecting the ‘Settings’ option all the way to the right. Then choose ‘General’ and finally ‘Update Software’. It took awhile for this update to install for me, but it will be worth the wait.

Now, you can rearrange the icons on the home screen however you like (with the exception of the top row). To do this, simply select an icon you want to move and hold down the ‘Select’ button (inside the circle on the remote) and the icons will start to jiggle just as they do on iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. Use the arrow keys to move the icon where you want it. When finished, simply press the ‘Select’ button again. Voila! Repeat the process until you get everything just where you want it.

The second ‘enhancement’ isn’t really an enhancement. But if you are into music and concerts, check out the ‘iTunes Festival’ icon on the home screen. You’ll get access to the month-long festival that Apple sponsored in London in the month of September. All of the concerts are there for you to watch from your favorite couch without any commercials! Very, very cool. I checked out the Matchbox Twenty concert (almost two HOURS long) and spotted a bunch of other concerts that I will be watching soon, too.

Enjoy these recent features on your AppleTV. If you have any hidden tricks, feel free to share. :)

My trip to the TWiT Studios

Posted on September 4, 2012 by Mike in Blog

I was recently in San Francisco with some time on my hands and decided to take a drive one hour north of the city to Petaluma to check out what Leo Laporte has going on with the new TWiT Brick House studios. It was a lot of fun to sit in on the recording of The Tech Guy radio show with Leo and to get a tour of the studio. I also ran into Matt from PixelCorps while he was working on the Sword & Laser set. Many people are not aware that this is back in the TWiT Studios but Matt was nice enough to show me around both the green screen portion of the set as well as the dungeon set complete with an actual dragon!

All of the guys that I met – JammerB, OMG Chad and all of the chatroom mods – were really cool guys and were happy to answer all of the setup and gear-related questions that I had. Here are a few photos from my trip. Enjoy.

If it wasn't for this sign, you'd never know it was here. Petaluma is a quaint little town an hour North of San Fran. This is a quiet street. Non-descript on the outside, but a geek's heaven inside.

A really cool looking set, especially with the lighting on the brick wall. Tech News Today doesn't record on the weekends. This set sits outside Leo's office set.

What Should The Indians Do?

Posted on July 31, 2012 by Same3Guys in Blog, GameTime Cleveland

The MLB Trading Deadline (without waivers) ends at 4PM today. The Indians are 50-52, which puts them 5 GB Chicago in 3rd place in the AL Central and 5.5GB in the WildCard hunt. The latest rumors suggest the team will not be very active. What’s your take on all of this?

Browns Make Good Move to Get Gordon

Posted on July 12, 2012 by Mike in Blog, GameTime Cleveland

The NFL held their 2012 Supplemental College Draft today. The main attraction was former Baylor WR Josh Gordon who, as you may know, was dismissed from the team in August 2010 for marijuana use. He transferred to Utah but never played there, opting to enroll in the Supplemental Draft and turn pro instead.

The Browns won the rights to Gordon today by using a 2nd round draft pick on him. The Browns were drafting #2 in each round (Buffalo had the #1 pick). Since no other team placed a higher claim than the Browns, he was awarded to us.

I LOVE the move. Many experts saw him as a 1st round pick in 2013; quite possibly a top 10 pick next year. The chances seem very good that the Browns will be picking in the top 10 next year, so the move today means we got a top WR and held on to our #1 pick at the same time. Nice move by GM Tom Heckert.

I must admit I was surprised at the team’s aggressiveness here. The fans have become used to the Browns trading down to get more picks. And there are other teams in the NFL that typically overspend when a pick is available (Raiders anyone? Remember their move to select QB Terrelle Pryor in 2011?).

Gordon is 6′ 3 1/8″ and 224 pounds. He has a 36″ vertical leap. And he ran a faster 40 yard dash than anyone his size in last year’s Combine. He’s been compared to WR Julio Jones, but with better hands. Wow. I’ll take that any day of the week.

If you put any credibility on the Wonderlic Test administered to all NFL Rookies prior to being drafted, Gordon scored a 24 out of 50. That is considered very good for a Quarter Back.

If you are worried about his off-the-field issues, I would say we should consider two points. First, he seems to have learned from his mistake and seemed very genuine in discussing it this week with NFL teams and reporters. So hopefully he’s learned his lesson. Second, isn’t it time the Browns focused a little more on guys that can play and less on their resume of Boy Scout of the Year? I’d rather see some wins on the field.

The Browns just drafted a guy who may very well be their #1 receiver of the future and kept their top pick for next year’s draft, when they should be able to select another guy at a position of need. It’s kinda nice to say that WR won’t be the greatest position of need.

Lastly, another reason to hope that he is the real deal is that this would break a two decade long string of Wide Receivers drafted by the Browns in the 2nd round that were flops. Remember these guys? Patrick Rowe, Kevin Johnson, Dennis Northcutt, Quincy Morgan, Andre’ Davis, Brian Robiskie, Mohamed Massaquoi.

An offense with BW3, T-Rich, Gordon, Little, Thomas/Mack/Schwartz? Things are starting to look up in Berea.

Cavs Should Stay Out of The Howard Trade

Posted on July 9, 2012 by Mike in Blog, GameTime Cleveland

Rumors began swirling late Sunday evening and all day Monday that the on-again, off-again trade of Orlando Magic Center Dwight Howard to the Brooklyn Nets was warming up. The surprising news for Clevelanders was the inclusion of our own Cavaliers as part of a multi-team trade.

Adrian Wojnarowski from Yahoo! Sports seemed to have most of the inside information on this and tweeted the structure of the deal that was being discussed on Monday afternoon.

The more I think about this and what the Cavs would be getting, I keep asking myself one question… Why?

Why do the Cavs want to help create another super team in the Eastern Conference? Wasn’t the whole point of the NBA lockout to prevent this sort of thing from happening? Doesn’t this make Cavs’ Owner Dan Gilbert look like a hypocrite?

Why does GM Chris Grant want to take on PF Kris Humphries? If we have to sign him to the four year deal he is looking for, that will be a heavy contract weighing us down for years. Don’t we already have a PF in Anderson Varejao that gives us essentially the same contribution each game? (Yes, only when he’s healthy.) Humphries averaged 13.8 ppg and 11 rebounds per game last season.

Why do we need yet another late 1st round draft pick? It’s rumored that we’ll get a lottery-protected draft pick from the LA Clippers as part of this deal (I guess the Clippers learned their lesson from the Mo Williams trade two years ago and decided to protect this pick). With Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and company, any draft pick we get won’t be very high anyway, right? We’ve already got our own, plus picks from Miami and the Lakers in the 1st round next year. Is Chris Grant’s goal to stockpile a bunch of mediocre never-will-be’s to play alongside star Kyrie Irving? Sounds kinda like what Danny Ferry did when LBJ was here.

The other parts of the trade coming to Cleveland are (reportedly) Orlando’s Quentin Richardson, Brooklyn’s Sundiata Gaines and $3 million from the Nets. Richardson is a 32 year old SF that averaged a whopping 4.5 ppg last season. Gaines has been with five teams in his three year career. He averaged 5.1 ppg last season with the Nets.

I hope the Cavs back off of this deal. If Howard wants out of Orlando that badly, Chris Grant should jack up the price for something better. Otherwise, we’re getting mediocre talent in return and helping create another power in the East. That sounds like a bad combination.
