GameTime Cleveland 159: Indians Are Rolling

Summary:

The Indians are your AL Central leaders. They swept the Mariners in a 4 game series and won three of those games in walk-off fashion. Now THAT’s style! We’ve got plenty of Tribe talk plus some NBA and NFL news, too. It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 37:48

1Q: Indians are rolling now

  • We kept giving Seattle opportunities to win on Monday, but the Mariners kept returning the favor. Perez gave up a HR in the 9th AGAIN to put Seattle up before we tied it up when they could not make a routine put out at 1B in our half of the inning.

  • Justin Smoak hit a HR in the top of the 10th but we got two on for Gomes in our turn before he ended it with his walk-off HR.

  • Masterson was dominant in the 6-0 win on Sunday against Felix Hernandez, striking out 11 in seven innings.

  • This time it was Brantley’s turn to drive in some runs. Michael Bourn’s speed on the bases sets the table for a lot of this action. Also a lot of clutch 2-out hitting, especially in that 2nd inning.

2Q: Are they the Kardiac Kids?

  • Friday and Saturday featured walk-off wins, one in extra innings Friday when Jason Kipnis hit a 3R HR to end it. Ubaldo struck out nine in 5 innings but the bullpen could not hold the lead.

  • Saturday we won 5-4 in the bottom of the 9th after Closer Chris Perez gave up TWO HOME RUNS with two outs in the top of the 9th to allow Seattle to tie it. This wasted a solid pitching performance from Zach McAllister. Reynolds plated Kipnis with the bases full to win it when Seattle catcher Jesus Montero’s foot was came off home plate.

3Q: NBA Final Four

  • San Antonio dominated Memphis in Gm1 of the Western Conference Finals. Either of these teams should give Miami some problems (we hope). Oklahoma City was too much of a finesse team (even when healthy) to stop the Heat, as we saw last year. Same with Golden State.

  • Miami has to wait until Wednesday to face Indiana in the Eastern Finals. The Pacers will play physical and tough defense but they don’t have enough offense to seriously challenge Miami. Right?

4Q: Lottery talk

  • Neither of us won the big PowerBall lotto. Did you?

  • The NBA Draft Lottery is Tuesday night. The Cavs will pick between #1 and #6, depending on the ping pong ball bounces.

  • The NFL is apparently ready to make themselves a year-round thing. They want to move the NFL Draft from April to May, so free agency can dominate the month of April.

  • They also want to move the scouting combine into March, at the start of the new league year.

Summary:

The Indians are playing much better ball of late. They entered action this week in 1st place. The NBA Draft Lottery is a week away. Who will evil David Stern’s rigged system

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 32:33

1Q: Indians Getting Hot

Good pitching of late.

  • Ubaldo has thrown three consecutive impressive starts, including Saturday’s win against Justin Verlander.

  • Masterson looked like an ace in Monday’s 1-0 complete game shutout.

  • McAllister pitching better.

  • Lack of save opportunities for Perez.

  • Lots of good hitting, coming from all spots of the lineup.

MLB leaders:

  • Reynolds leading with 11 HRs already 5th in RBI.

  • Santana a league leader in BA

  • Bourn back from the DL.

2Q: More Tribe

  • New players providing big contributions (Reynolds, Swisher)

  • Yan Gomes calls a good game (pitchers ERA < 3 when he catches) and throws out runners.

  • Chisenhall sent down to AAA Columbus. His throwing error that led to a Tiger run probably sealed the decision since he was already struggling at the plate.

3Q: NBA Lottery Next Week

  • Cavs have the third best shot at landing the top overall pick.

    • Orlando 25%

    • Charlotte 19.9%

    • Cleveland 15.6%

    • Phoenix 11.9%

    • New Orleans 8.8%

  • The also own the Lakers pick (#19) and #31 and #33.

  • Play the Lottery game to see what might happen.

4Q: Who Might the Cavs Select?

  • Nerlens Noel is the top candidate for most teams.

  • Oladipo, McLemore, Burke, Porter are other top prospects but may not all fit with the Cavs.

GameTime Cleveland 157: Browns add some Bark

Summary:

Can you give Joe Banner a passing grade for the Draft when he passed on two rounds altogether? We’ve got the recap of the players the new Browns Front Office picked, and the picks that they traded, during the 2013 NFL Draft. It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 41:43

1Q: The Browns add some Bark to the Dawg Pound

  • Browns picks.

  • The scenario most fans wanted to unfold, did. CB Dee Milliner was available for the Browns at #6. But they went another way and took LSU DE/LB Barkevious Mingo to the fold.

  • He’s the fastest pass rusher in the draft, but also a very light 240 pounds.

  • Interestingly, this is about the size of Chip Banks and he turned out to be a pretty good player (though off-the-field problems ruined his career).

  • DC Ray Horton promised an aggressive defense and this gives the Browns an OLB to play opposite Paul Kruger and (hopefully) give the Browns their best pass rushing attack since they’ve been back.

  • Jabaal Sheard is also projected to be an OLB, so unless they end up moving him, this should give the team some depth at LB.

2Q: Browns go for a CB in the 3rd round

  • Finally addressing a glaring need, they nab CB Leon McFadden from San Diego State (Sipe’s alma mater).

  • At 5-9 5/8 he is undersized. He has to face the likes of AJ Green (2x) & Calvin Johnson this year.

  • On the plus side, he played a lot at SDSU and was in a pass-happy conference, so he should have a lot of good experience playing the position.

  • Aside from his lack of size, he was also the 11th CB drafted.

  • Our alternatives are Buster Skrine or Chris Owens (signed from ATL)

3Q: Then the Browns punted.

  • Traded with the STEELERS ! Traded our 4th rd pick for their 3rd rd pick next year.
  • Traded our 5th rd pick for the Colts 4th rd pick next year.
  • C’mon. They weren’t ANY guys that could have helped us there? There were still some good Safeties on the board.
  • PIT used our pick to draft one (Shermarko Thomas, Syracuse).
  • Phillip Thomas (Fresno St) was taken later in the round.
  • Unless the Browns didn’t have them rated as 4th/5th rounders.
  • We took Jamoris Slaughter (Notre Dame) in Rd 6. Tore his Achilles Tendon in GM3 last year and didn’t expect to be drafted at all.
  • Two picks in Rd 7 from Div II schools. DE Armonty Bryant (East Central – Okla) and OL Garrett Gilkey (Chadron State – NEB)

4Q: Traded for WR Davone Bess

  • acquired Bess from the Dolphins for a swap of picks

  • signed him to three year extension already

  • never had <50 receptions as a pro

  • a veteran that works best as a slot receiver (we’ve lacked a vet there since Jurevicius)

  • with addition of Buffalo WR David Nelson, the WR spot is getting crowded (Gordon, Little, Bess, Josh Cooper, Travis Benjamin, Jordan Norwood)

GameTime Cleveland 156: Pilot Error

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Summary:

Pilot Flying J is in big trouble. How will this affect the Browns? This mess makes the NFL Draft seem much less important, but it’s still coming on Thursday. What do the Banner/Lombardi duo have in store? We’ll soon find out. It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 43:29

1Q: FBI Affidavit alleges Haslam fully aware of fraud activities

  • Innocent until proven guilty, but this can’t possibly end well for Haslam or Pilot Flying J. Best case, Haslam will be cleared, but his company won’t. And it’s not going to help sales.
  • On Monday, Haslam outline his “5 point plan” which basically passed the blame to everyone else in his organization. His points include:
    • placed several employees on administrative leave.
    • hiring a compliance officer
    • hiring an external auditor to report to the Board
    • stopping their manual sales transactions
  • What will this mean for his ownership of the Browns?
  • How will the NFL (Goodell and other owners) react? Will they allow him to continue owning the team? Will they ask him to step down?
  • Is this a bad dream? What in the world is happening here?

2Q: NFL Draft

  • Banner & Lombardi’s 1st draft with the Browns comes up on Thursday. Could it also be their last (if another ownership change is ahead)?

  • Will they trade down?

  • There’s no way they take Milliner if the CB is still on the board, is there? Banner seems to value D-Line & O-Line.

  • Can they find a partner to trade down and get more picks?

  • There’s no way they take a QB in the 1st round, is there?

3Q: Byron Scott out as Cavs Coach

  • Said he doesn’t believe he got fair shake.
  • thought he’d be coaching LBJ when hired

  • never had Verajao for more than 31 games in any of his 3 seasons

  • where were the free agents?

  • Omri Casspi?

  • Team rumored to be courting Mike Brown to come back. What in the world is happening here?

  • No chance Phil Jackson comes here, despite ESPN report saying that Gilbert reached out to him.

4Q: Big Ten will realign again in 2014

  • Finally dumping the Legends and Leaders designation.

  • Big Ten divisions will be aligned geographically and named accordingly as East and West

  • Dropping protected games between divisions with one exception.

  • Intended to allow teams to get 7 home games.

GameTime Cleveland 155: The Mighty Masters

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Summary:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected by the tragedy at the Boston Marathon. We offer this episode of sports talk as a temporary distraction from the horrors that took place on April 15, 2013.

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 38:25

1Q: Trouble at Pilot Flying J

  • The FBI and IRS have secured the HeadQuarters of Jimmy Haslam’s Pilot Flying J as part of an ongoing investigation.

  • Remember when we thought the Browns’ ownership change would stop making us look like the laughing stock of the NFL?

  • Criticism over lack of spending on Free Agents, choices for President (Banner) and GM (Lombardi) had already taken some of the shine off the new ownership.

  • Too early to speculate but we should know more in the next few days.

  • Oh, yeah. The NFL Draft is next week.

2Q: Another strong finish at the Masters

  • Jason Day bogeyed 16 and 17, giving up his share of the lead with Adam Scott.

  • Angel Cabrera forced a tie with a great putt on 17.

  • Scott and Cabrera ended up tied and had VERY similar shots on the 1st playoff.

  • Cabrera missed a chance for birdie by an inch on the 2nd playoff hole and Scott sank his from further out to get the green jacket.

  • Woods controversy with his drop on 15 on Friday. Should have been disqualified but they invoked a new rule that allowed them to keep him around. How convenient!

3Q: Indians off and running

  • Masterson off to a good start with a 3-0 record.

  • Mark Reynolds has been showing some power with 5 HRs already including Saturday’s grand slam in a 9-4 win.

  • Catchers are hurting: Carlos Santana & Lou Marson (neck strain / 15day DL) have already both missed games with injuries, forcing Yan Gomes and Omir Santos to be called up.

  • Michael Bourn slid into first on Sunday and got spiked, forcing him out of the game with a laceration on his right hand.

  • Using a lot of starters already. Carlos Carrasco hit a batter in his first game back from injury and suspension. Trevor Bauer was wild in his forced first start. Corey Kluber sent to minors. Scott Kazmir on the DL.

  • Games Tuesday and Wednesday against the Yankees were rained out.

  • Host Boston for 3 games starting TUES. Then off to Houston for 3 games.

4Q: Cavs winding down

  • If Lakers make the 8th seed in the playoffs, the Cavs get their pick (15th?). But LA will have to do it without Kobe Bryant (ACL Tear). Utah is on their tails.

  • If Lakers miss the playoffs, we get Miami’s pick (30th).

  • Our own pick will either be 3rd or 4th (for ping pong balls) depending on the final standings.

  • Do you keep Byron Scott? What about GM Chris Grant?

  • No real signs of improvement this year. If that was by design to get a higher pick, then you can’t fire the coach, can you?
