Summary:

NFL Free Agency begins this week. Joe Banner and Jimmy Haslam have said the Browns would not make a big splash, yet rumors suggest otherwise. Who will they pursue to turn this franchise around? In basketball, it’s playoff time for boys and girls high school. And the NCAA conference tourneys get underway in the ramp up to select the field of 68. It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 38:14

1Q: NFL Free Agency Signings

  • Signings can officially commence on Tuesday at 4PM.
  • It seems likely that Mike Wallace will sign with MIA tomorrow.
  • Browns rumored to be favorites to land DE Cliff Avril (DET) and are rumored to be competing with IND and BAL for Ravens LBs Paul Kruger and Dannell Ellerby.
  • ESPN’s Free Agent Tracker
  • Charger CB Antoine Cason and Cardinal S Adrian Wilson are also rumored to be of interest due to their ties with Norv Turner and Ray Horton.
  • Will we suddenly become loaded with ex-Chargers, Cardinals and Eagles? I hope not.
  • Other players the Browns are linked to: WR Julian Edelman (NE), CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (PHI), TE Jared Cook (TEN), TE Brandon Myers (OAK)

2Q: More on the NFL Rumors/Signings

  • Cribbs getting interest from SF, NY Giants and some others
  • Will Phil Dawson go home to Texas and sign with Dallas or Houston? Or latch on to someone like the 49ers? What is the market for a 38yo kicker?
  • Today, Percy Harvin was traded to SEA. Anquan Boldin traded to SF.

3Q: Conference Tourney Time

  • Conference Tourneys get underway this week to decide automatic bids. It’s also a chance for at-large teams to make impressions on the selection committee.
  • Big Ten gets started on Thursday
    • Very close race with lots of teams close in final regular season records. (5 ranked in the Top 25)
    • #2 Buckeyes will face the winner of #7 Purdue/#10 Nebraska on Friday.
    • #1 Indiana, #3 Michigan State, #4 Wisconsin
  • Mac Tourney starts Monday
    • Will #1 seed Akron be able to win without their starting PG?
    • #2 Ohio U, #3 Western Michigan, #4 Kent State
  • Hard to pick a favorite in college this year. No dominant team. Gonzaga is actually likely to be a #1 seed in the tourney.
  • Last year’s National Champs (Kentucky) won’t even make the post-season this year after all of the one-and-done players.

4Q: High School Hoops

  • Follow your favorite Boys and Girls teams through the OHSAA playoffs
  • In Division IV:
    • Congrats to VASJ in winning their District (Division IV) by routing Richmond Hts 67-47.
    • Regional Pairings: VASJ vs Windham
  • In Division I:
    • Shaker Hts moves on by knocking off Ignatius 61-52.
    • North Royalton upset #1 St. Eds 53-51
    • Regional Pairings: Nordonia vs Broadview Hts, Shaker Hts vs N Royalton, Mentor vs North Canton Hoover
  • In Division II:
    • Benedictine beats #1 Cleve Cent Catholic 60-50
    • Regional Pairings: Akron SVSM vs Cuy Valley Christian, Warrensville Hts vs Yngtn Cardinal Mooney, Benedictine vs Lima Bath (how’d they end up in BGSU Regional???)
  • In Division III:
    • #1 Beachwood wins their District Final
    • Regional Pairings: Beachwood vs Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas

GameTime Cleveland 150: Tribe Springs Forward

Summary:

As we all get ready to change clocks and “spring forward”, our Tribe gets busy in Goodyear trying to do the same thing. Lots of buzz about the Indians’ offseason moves mean that we get to see the new-look ballclub on the field of play. Time to talk about early impressions. And, in the NFL, will the Browns make a big splash or stay low-key as they have been hinting at all along? It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 33:57

1Q: Baerga and Hart inducted to Indians HOF

  • Former 2B Carlos Baerga and GM John Hart inducted to the Indians HOF
  • Two men that were a HUGE part of the Indians’ success in the 90’s.
  • Baerga was one of the first players signed to a long contract, which was the key strategy Hart used to get a collection of young talented players that could grow together.
  • Fan favorite, terrific hitter, inspirational team leader as the organization began to shed that streak of perennial losers.
  • Came to team in Joe Carter trade. Sandy, Carlos and Chris James came over from SD in 89.
  • Hart orchestrated a team that was ready to emerge on the scene with the opening of Jacobs Field. He infused a mix of veteran FAs (Dennis Martinez, Eddie Murray) with the core young group (Lofton, Baerga, Belle, Alomar, Nagy).
  • You see teams do this a lot now (think Tampa with Evan Longoria, for example). But it was pretty rare back then.
  • This was creativity in constructing a ballclub before the word MoneyBall ever entered anyone’s vocabulary.

2Q: Spring Training Update

  • Spring Training schedule/results
  • Chris Perez will be out 3-4 weeks (shoulder). Pestano will be first in line to fill in as closer while he recuperates.
  • Starters will be the weak link on this squad. Ubaldo not impressing early. Dice K clocked in the 80s in his action last week.
  • Ryan Raburn (31, utility infielder) making a strong move to earn a roster spot with a strong spring so far. (9 for 18, 0.500, 4HR, 9RBI)
  • Also good so far: Brantley, Swisher, Chisenhall
  • Pitching: Nick Hagadone, Scott Kazmir looking good. Still very early.

3Q: Weeden had trouble reading defenses?

  • In an interview Trent Richardson said that Weeden had trouble reading defenses and they had to simplify the offense for him. But says he really likes Weeden. Imagine if they weren’t friends?!!!
  • Organization has not had much positive to say about Weeden, despite having many opportunities. They want improvement at QB position but the reality is a franchise QB doesn’t seem to be out there right now (assuming Flacco gets the exclusive franchise tag applied or signs a new deal with BAL).
  • To be fair to Weeden, this offense was completely different than what he ran in college. So maybe he saw defenses that he never saw before? Not sure. This is an interesting – and scary – criticism of the QB.
  • But now he’s working out with Chris Weinke???

4Q: NFL Free Agency Next Week

  • Free agents can officially sign on March 12th
  • Browns “say” they won’t make a big splash.
  • If they do, that would be OK with fans.
  • Unrealistic to think WR Mike Wallace would sign here.
  • Ex-Cards DB William Gay signed with PITT instead of possibly reuniting with DC Ray Horton and said “That’s Cleveland. I don’t know if I could have handled that.”
  • Ravens LB Paul Kruger?
  • A Tight End for Chud? Ravens will probably slap RFA tag on Dennis Pitta.

GameTime Cleveland 149: Bourn Identity

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Summary:

The Indians continue their offseason of acquisitions, adding CF Michael Bourn to the fold. With a revamped outfield and some much-needed power, can the Tribe compete in 2013? Or will the pitching be their Achilles’ heel? It should be a fun season down at the ole ballpark this year.

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic
Running Time: 40:29

1Q: Indians Sign Michael Bourn

  • A 4 year, $48M deal for the former Atlanta CF
  • 30 years old, with great speed
  • He will play CF and bat leadoff
  • He stole more bases in last 5 years than anyone in MLB
  • Drew Stubbs will move to RF. Brantley will play LF
  • Indians should have fastest OF (pitchers will love the hits they prevent for them)
  • Kipnis (31 SB), Stubbs (30 SB) will add to the speed at top of the order
  • Francona wants this team to run in ’13

2Q: A different line-up for the Tribe in 2013

  • Gone are: Hafner, Choo, Sizemore (didn’t play in 2012), Kotchman, Hannahan, Damon.
  • In are: Bourn, Stubbs, Swisher, Reynolds and Chisenhall (returning from injury)
  • more power, probably more Strike Outs (though we had plenty in ‘12), a better outfield defensively
  • Continued improvement of guys like Kipnis. Asdrubal is in shape this Spring, unlike last few years.
  • Likely starters (not the batting order)
    • C Carlos Santana
    • 1B Nick Swisher
    • 2B Jason Kipnis
    • SS Asdrubal Cabrera
    • 3B Lonnie Chisenhall
    • LF Michael Brantley
    • CF Michael Bourn
    • RF Drew Stubbs
    • DH Mark Reynolds

3Q: Pitching will be the key for the Indians

  • Will we have a decent rotation?
  • We added Brett Myers (took him from CHISOX) but he’s been a relief pitcher of late.
  • We traded for young gun Trevor Bauer, who has great arm but appears to be a head case.
  • Carlos Carrasco back from Tommy John surgery. What will we get from him?
  • Masterson and Ubaldo at the top of the lineup are KEY.
  • Ubaldo had most losses (17) and Wild Pitches (16) last year. He says he had bad mechanics. We’ll see. Hopefully he corrected them.
  • Masterson struggled with control. Aside from 2011 when he was great, he has struggled with control his whole career. Was 2011 a fluke or can he turn it around?
  • Zach McAllister pitched well. Will he continue to improve in 13?
  • 5th starter: choose from Carlos Carrasco, Trevor Bauer, Dice K, Scott Kazmir, Corey Kluber. Does anyone here really excite you?
  • Our rotation is a bunch of average guys. Best case is they are all innings eaters and maybe one of them has a > .500 record.

4Q: What about the Bullpen?

  • Chris Perez – can he repeat his outstanding year?
  • Vinnie Pestano – best as a setup man but showed he can close in a pinch
  • Joe Smith
  • Nick Hagadone – young guy on the rise
  • Can the starters eat enough innings to keep the pen rested?

GameTime Cleveland 148: Lights Out

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Summary:

Will the Browns pursue the SuperBowl MVP? What effect does Jimmy Haslam’s return as CEO of Pilot Flying J have on the Browns’ operations? We’ll talk about these stories, recap SuperBowl 47 and look ahead to the baseball season after the Indians made a couple of signings over the weekend. Lots of sports to discuss. It’s GameTime!

Note: We recorded this podcast before the news broke about the Indians signing Michael Bourn. We’ll cover that news in next week’s show.

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic
Running Time: 49:52

1Q: SuperBowl Goes to Baltimore

  • Baltimore returned 2nd half kickoff for TD. Baltimore up 28-6. Then the lights went out. Literally.
  • 49ers mounted furious comeback after the lights went back on (Ravens were pretty conservative on play calls, too).

2Q: Flacco rumors and Haslam back at Pilot Flying J

  • Flacco played great in the playoffs. 12 TDs, no INTs. He can be a free agent. Will Baltimore put the deluxe franchise tag on him and pay him $20M or take a chance that he won’t want to leave? Rumors already suggest the Browns would give up two #1s and sign him to a deal that Baltimore would not want to match. Is this just Banner leaking more stories to the press?
  • Haslam resigned his position just six months ago to focus on the Browns. But now he has reinstated himself at “his first love”.
  • What does this mean for the Browns?

3Q: Tribe signs some aging former stars

  • 42 year old Jason Giambi signed as DH. 1HR in 89 ABs last year with Colorado.
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka (Dice K) gets $1.5 M if on active roster (could be up to $4M). He had Tommy John surgery in 2011 and was on the decline even before that in the last few years.
  • Pitchers and catchers reported on Sunday.
  • Spring Training key dates:
    • Position players are required to report on Wednesday.
    • First full-squad workout scheduled for Friday morning.
    • Cleveland’s first Spring Training game is a matchup against the intrastate-rival Reds on Feb. 22 at Goodyear Ballpark

4Q: Cavs’ recent surge

  • The new players have helped spark some wins recently.
  • Record is 16-35 after going 6-4 over their last 10.
  • This still isn’t a playoff team in 2013, right?

Summary:

The Browns introduce their new Defensive Coordinator. The fans aren’t the only ones nervous about the changes he will bring to town. And, it’s SuperBowl week. After all of the hype leading up to the game is over, will we see some good football? The defenses are elite but are both offenses the best in the game? It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 46:25

1Q: Browns DC Ray Horton Introduced

  • He thinks the Browns don’t need to overhaul the roster to play his defense.
  • Horton wants “big guys that can run and little guys that can hit”. Get used to hearing this phrase.
  • Likes Billy Winn, Ahtyba Rubin, TJ Ward, among others.
  • Some guys, like Jabaal Sheard and D’Qwell Jackson, are a little nervous about switching to a 3-4.
  • Horton will model us after the Steelers defense, which is always attacking, blitzing and trying to take away what you do best as an offense. He learned from Dick LeBeau.

2Q: SuperBowl 47 Matchup

  • Ravens versus 49ers
  • Flacco versus Kaepernick
  • John (fired OC in December) versus Jim (replaced starting QB mid-season)

3Q: SuperBowl Controversy

  • Did Ray Lewis use banned substances to speed his recovery and make it back in time for the playoffs?
  • Randy Moss thinks he is the best receiver of all time. Jerry Rice, and the rest of the world, beg to differ.
  • Who has the better RBs? Who has the better WRs? Who will make the biggest impact that decides the outcome of this game?

4Q: SuperBowl Picks

  • What is the point spread?
  • What does the Nation think wins the game?
  • What do we think?
  • Will Alicia Keys sing the National Anthem in less than/greater than 2 mins 15 seconds? There’s a prop bet for that and many other things.
  • What color Gatorade will be used to douse the winning Coach?
  • The most popular prop bet of all: heads or tails?
  • Will the Halftime show stink? Will Beyonce lip sync again?
