Summary:

The Indians are playing much better ball of late. They entered action this week in 1st place. The NBA Draft Lottery is a week away. Who will evil David Stern’s rigged system

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 32:33

1Q: Indians Getting Hot

Good pitching of late.

  • Ubaldo has thrown three consecutive impressive starts, including Saturday’s win against Justin Verlander.

  • Masterson looked like an ace in Monday’s 1-0 complete game shutout.

  • McAllister pitching better.

  • Lack of save opportunities for Perez.

  • Lots of good hitting, coming from all spots of the lineup.

MLB leaders:

  • Reynolds leading with 11 HRs already 5th in RBI.

  • Santana a league leader in BA

  • Bourn back from the DL.

2Q: More Tribe

  • New players providing big contributions (Reynolds, Swisher)

  • Yan Gomes calls a good game (pitchers ERA < 3 when he catches) and throws out runners.

  • Chisenhall sent down to AAA Columbus. His throwing error that led to a Tiger run probably sealed the decision since he was already struggling at the plate.

3Q: NBA Lottery Next Week

  • Cavs have the third best shot at landing the top overall pick.

    • Orlando 25%

    • Charlotte 19.9%

    • Cleveland 15.6%

    • Phoenix 11.9%

    • New Orleans 8.8%

  • The also own the Lakers pick (#19) and #31 and #33.

  • Play the Lottery game to see what might happen.

4Q: Who Might the Cavs Select?

  • Nerlens Noel is the top candidate for most teams.

  • Oladipo, McLemore, Burke, Porter are other top prospects but may not all fit with the Cavs.

GameTime Cleveland 156: Pilot Error

Summary:

Pilot Flying J is in big trouble. How will this affect the Browns? This mess makes the NFL Draft seem much less important, but it’s still coming on Thursday. What do the Banner/Lombardi duo have in store? We’ll soon find out. It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 43:29

1Q: FBI Affidavit alleges Haslam fully aware of fraud activities

  • Innocent until proven guilty, but this can’t possibly end well for Haslam or Pilot Flying J. Best case, Haslam will be cleared, but his company won’t. And it’s not going to help sales.
  • On Monday, Haslam outline his “5 point plan” which basically passed the blame to everyone else in his organization. His points include:
    • placed several employees on administrative leave.
    • hiring a compliance officer
    • hiring an external auditor to report to the Board
    • stopping their manual sales transactions
  • What will this mean for his ownership of the Browns?
  • How will the NFL (Goodell and other owners) react? Will they allow him to continue owning the team? Will they ask him to step down?
  • Is this a bad dream? What in the world is happening here?

2Q: NFL Draft

  • Banner & Lombardi’s 1st draft with the Browns comes up on Thursday. Could it also be their last (if another ownership change is ahead)?

  • Will they trade down?

  • There’s no way they take Milliner if the CB is still on the board, is there? Banner seems to value D-Line & O-Line.

  • Can they find a partner to trade down and get more picks?

  • There’s no way they take a QB in the 1st round, is there?

3Q: Byron Scott out as Cavs Coach

  • Said he doesn’t believe he got fair shake.
  • thought he’d be coaching LBJ when hired

  • never had Verajao for more than 31 games in any of his 3 seasons

  • where were the free agents?

  • Omri Casspi?

  • Team rumored to be courting Mike Brown to come back. What in the world is happening here?

  • No chance Phil Jackson comes here, despite ESPN report saying that Gilbert reached out to him.

4Q: Big Ten will realign again in 2014

  • Finally dumping the Legends and Leaders designation.

  • Big Ten divisions will be aligned geographically and named accordingly as East and West

  • Dropping protected games between divisions with one exception.

  • Intended to allow teams to get 7 home games.

GameTime Cleveland 155: The Mighty Masters

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Summary:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected by the tragedy at the Boston Marathon. We offer this episode of sports talk as a temporary distraction from the horrors that took place on April 15, 2013.

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 38:25

1Q: Trouble at Pilot Flying J

  • The FBI and IRS have secured the HeadQuarters of Jimmy Haslam’s Pilot Flying J as part of an ongoing investigation.

  • Remember when we thought the Browns’ ownership change would stop making us look like the laughing stock of the NFL?

  • Criticism over lack of spending on Free Agents, choices for President (Banner) and GM (Lombardi) had already taken some of the shine off the new ownership.

  • Too early to speculate but we should know more in the next few days.

  • Oh, yeah. The NFL Draft is next week.

2Q: Another strong finish at the Masters

  • Jason Day bogeyed 16 and 17, giving up his share of the lead with Adam Scott.

  • Angel Cabrera forced a tie with a great putt on 17.

  • Scott and Cabrera ended up tied and had VERY similar shots on the 1st playoff.

  • Cabrera missed a chance for birdie by an inch on the 2nd playoff hole and Scott sank his from further out to get the green jacket.

  • Woods controversy with his drop on 15 on Friday. Should have been disqualified but they invoked a new rule that allowed them to keep him around. How convenient!

3Q: Indians off and running

  • Masterson off to a good start with a 3-0 record.

  • Mark Reynolds has been showing some power with 5 HRs already including Saturday’s grand slam in a 9-4 win.

  • Catchers are hurting: Carlos Santana & Lou Marson (neck strain / 15day DL) have already both missed games with injuries, forcing Yan Gomes and Omir Santos to be called up.

  • Michael Bourn slid into first on Sunday and got spiked, forcing him out of the game with a laceration on his right hand.

  • Using a lot of starters already. Carlos Carrasco hit a batter in his first game back from injury and suspension. Trevor Bauer was wild in his forced first start. Corey Kluber sent to minors. Scott Kazmir on the DL.

  • Games Tuesday and Wednesday against the Yankees were rained out.

  • Host Boston for 3 games starting TUES. Then off to Houston for 3 games.

4Q: Cavs winding down

  • If Lakers make the 8th seed in the playoffs, the Cavs get their pick (15th?). But LA will have to do it without Kobe Bryant (ACL Tear). Utah is on their tails.

  • If Lakers miss the playoffs, we get Miami’s pick (30th).

  • Our own pick will either be 3rd or 4th (for ping pong balls) depending on the final standings.

  • Do you keep Byron Scott? What about GM Chris Grant?

  • No real signs of improvement this year. If that was by design to get a higher pick, then you can’t fire the coach, can you?

GameTime Cleveland 148: Lights Out

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Summary:

Will the Browns pursue the SuperBowl MVP? What effect does Jimmy Haslam’s return as CEO of Pilot Flying J have on the Browns’ operations? We’ll talk about these stories, recap SuperBowl 47 and look ahead to the baseball season after the Indians made a couple of signings over the weekend. Lots of sports to discuss. It’s GameTime!

Note: We recorded this podcast before the news broke about the Indians signing Michael Bourn. We’ll cover that news in next week’s show.

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic
Running Time: 49:52

1Q: SuperBowl Goes to Baltimore

  • Baltimore returned 2nd half kickoff for TD. Baltimore up 28-6. Then the lights went out. Literally.
  • 49ers mounted furious comeback after the lights went back on (Ravens were pretty conservative on play calls, too).

2Q: Flacco rumors and Haslam back at Pilot Flying J

  • Flacco played great in the playoffs. 12 TDs, no INTs. He can be a free agent. Will Baltimore put the deluxe franchise tag on him and pay him $20M or take a chance that he won’t want to leave? Rumors already suggest the Browns would give up two #1s and sign him to a deal that Baltimore would not want to match. Is this just Banner leaking more stories to the press?
  • Haslam resigned his position just six months ago to focus on the Browns. But now he has reinstated himself at “his first love”.
  • What does this mean for the Browns?

3Q: Tribe signs some aging former stars

  • 42 year old Jason Giambi signed as DH. 1HR in 89 ABs last year with Colorado.
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka (Dice K) gets $1.5 M if on active roster (could be up to $4M). He had Tommy John surgery in 2011 and was on the decline even before that in the last few years.
  • Pitchers and catchers reported on Sunday.
  • Spring Training key dates:
    • Position players are required to report on Wednesday.
    • First full-squad workout scheduled for Friday morning.
    • Cleveland’s first Spring Training game is a matchup against the intrastate-rival Reds on Feb. 22 at Goodyear Ballpark

4Q: Cavs’ recent surge

  • The new players have helped spark some wins recently.
  • Record is 16-35 after going 6-4 over their last 10.
  • This still isn’t a playoff team in 2013, right?

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

As 2012 comes to an end, we look back at the biggest stories in Cleveland sports throughout the year. From the College World Series to the Olympics, and of course our Browns, Cavs, Indians and Buckeyes we will talk about the highs and lows and peek ahead to what may be in store for 2013. Its GameTime!

1Q: Browns Season Almost Over

  • Blown out in Denver 34-12.
  • Injuries to Weeden and T-Rich mean time for subs.
  • But Colt injured, too. So Thad Lewis may start against PIT.
  • Hardesty & Brandon Jackson (finally active) should play.
  • Joe Thomas and Phil Dawson selected to Pro Bowl.
  • Cribbs, D’Qwell and Alex Mack are alternates.
  • Chance to sweep the Steelers.

2Q: What changes are coming?

  • Shurmur and Heckert will be gone before New Years.
  • Where will the changes end?
  • Is Lombardi coming, as feared/predicted?
  • Where does Haslam turn for his head coach? College? Announcer booth? NFL Assistant?
  • Weeden a lock to return as starter?

3Q: 2012 Year in Review

  • Kent State first College World Series appearance in school history
  • NE Ohioans in the Summer Olympics
  • Buckeyes:
    • Hoops team went to the Final 4 (lost to Kansas 64-62 in the Semi Final)
    • Football team struggled under Luke Fickell in the wake of Tattoo Gate.
    • Then hired Urban Meyer and went 12-0 in his 1st year

4Q: 2012 Year in Review continued

  • Cavs (21-45 in 2011-12):
    • Rebuilding has meant bad basketball.
    • Kyrie was Rookie of Year.
    • Dumped some veterans, like Antawn Jamison and Antony Parker to go younger.
    • Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller picked in the draft.
    • Just not enough talent.
    • Need to hit a big lottery pick b/c FAs won’t sign here.
  • Indians (68-94):
    • Team flames out in August (11 game losing streak starts July 27th, one day after BEATING Justin Verlander!). The lost 14 of 15 in a separate streak.
    • Grady Sizemore resigned for 2012, but never played.
    • Travis Hafner continued to be injured.
    • Many others failed to meet expectations (Masterson, Santana, Choo among them)
    • Chris Perez great year on the field, but too much twitter off of it.
    • Manny Acta fired. Terry Francona brought in.
    • Shin Shoo Choo traded
  • Browns (5-10):
    • Draft T-Rich, Weeden, Schwartz, Winn,
    • Jim Brown calls TRich ‘ordinary’. Still ticked at Holmgren.
    • We reach high for unknown Josh Gordon in the Supplemental Draft (2nd rd pick)
    • Haslam ownership change at the start of training camp
