Summary:

The Indians are playing much better ball of late. They entered action this week in 1st place. The NBA Draft Lottery is a week away. Who will evil David Stern’s rigged system

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 32:33

1Q: Indians Getting Hot

Good pitching of late.

  • Ubaldo has thrown three consecutive impressive starts, including Saturday’s win against Justin Verlander.

  • Masterson looked like an ace in Monday’s 1-0 complete game shutout.

  • McAllister pitching better.

  • Lack of save opportunities for Perez.

  • Lots of good hitting, coming from all spots of the lineup.

MLB leaders:

  • Reynolds leading with 11 HRs already 5th in RBI.

  • Santana a league leader in BA

  • Bourn back from the DL.

2Q: More Tribe

  • New players providing big contributions (Reynolds, Swisher)

  • Yan Gomes calls a good game (pitchers ERA < 3 when he catches) and throws out runners.

  • Chisenhall sent down to AAA Columbus. His throwing error that led to a Tiger run probably sealed the decision since he was already struggling at the plate.

3Q: NBA Lottery Next Week

  • Cavs have the third best shot at landing the top overall pick.

    • Orlando 25%

    • Charlotte 19.9%

    • Cleveland 15.6%

    • Phoenix 11.9%

    • New Orleans 8.8%

  • The also own the Lakers pick (#19) and #31 and #33.

  • Play the Lottery game to see what might happen.

4Q: Who Might the Cavs Select?

  • Nerlens Noel is the top candidate for most teams.

  • Oladipo, McLemore, Burke, Porter are other top prospects but may not all fit with the Cavs.

GameTime Cleveland 155: The Mighty Masters

Summary:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected by the tragedy at the Boston Marathon. We offer this episode of sports talk as a temporary distraction from the horrors that took place on April 15, 2013.

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 38:25

1Q: Trouble at Pilot Flying J

  • The FBI and IRS have secured the HeadQuarters of Jimmy Haslam’s Pilot Flying J as part of an ongoing investigation.

  • Remember when we thought the Browns’ ownership change would stop making us look like the laughing stock of the NFL?

  • Criticism over lack of spending on Free Agents, choices for President (Banner) and GM (Lombardi) had already taken some of the shine off the new ownership.

  • Too early to speculate but we should know more in the next few days.

  • Oh, yeah. The NFL Draft is next week.

2Q: Another strong finish at the Masters

  • Jason Day bogeyed 16 and 17, giving up his share of the lead with Adam Scott.

  • Angel Cabrera forced a tie with a great putt on 17.

  • Scott and Cabrera ended up tied and had VERY similar shots on the 1st playoff.

  • Cabrera missed a chance for birdie by an inch on the 2nd playoff hole and Scott sank his from further out to get the green jacket.

  • Woods controversy with his drop on 15 on Friday. Should have been disqualified but they invoked a new rule that allowed them to keep him around. How convenient!

3Q: Indians off and running

  • Masterson off to a good start with a 3-0 record.

  • Mark Reynolds has been showing some power with 5 HRs already including Saturday’s grand slam in a 9-4 win.

  • Catchers are hurting: Carlos Santana & Lou Marson (neck strain / 15day DL) have already both missed games with injuries, forcing Yan Gomes and Omir Santos to be called up.

  • Michael Bourn slid into first on Sunday and got spiked, forcing him out of the game with a laceration on his right hand.

  • Using a lot of starters already. Carlos Carrasco hit a batter in his first game back from injury and suspension. Trevor Bauer was wild in his forced first start. Corey Kluber sent to minors. Scott Kazmir on the DL.

  • Games Tuesday and Wednesday against the Yankees were rained out.

  • Host Boston for 3 games starting TUES. Then off to Houston for 3 games.

4Q: Cavs winding down

  • If Lakers make the 8th seed in the playoffs, the Cavs get their pick (15th?). But LA will have to do it without Kobe Bryant (ACL Tear). Utah is on their tails.

  • If Lakers miss the playoffs, we get Miami’s pick (30th).

  • Our own pick will either be 3rd or 4th (for ping pong balls) depending on the final standings.

  • Do you keep Byron Scott? What about GM Chris Grant?

  • No real signs of improvement this year. If that was by design to get a higher pick, then you can’t fire the coach, can you?

GameTime Cleveland 154: Play Ball, Eh

Summary:

The Buckeyes’ run in the tourney ends. But there is a BigTen team still alive in the Final Four. We look ahead to the Indians season and reflect on the recent QB transactions by the Browns. It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 35:30

1Q: Buckeyes Shocked by Wichita State

  • The Shockers were too much for Ohio State to handle.

  • 20 point deficit was just too much for the Buckeyes to come back from.

  • Way too many shots at close range that did not fall. Where are the dunkers on this team?

  • We never effectively replaced Jared Sullinger and had no low post authority to throw the ball into and set up the outside jump shots.

  • To be effective, Craft has to be the facilitator. When he has to give us offense, we are in trouble.

  • It was a good run in a year we didn’t expect the Buckeyes to be great.

2Q: The Final Four

  • Louisville is the only #1 seed to survive this far.

  • They are joined by #4 Michigan, #4 Syracuse and #9 Wichita State

  • Gruesome injury to Kevin Ware from Louisville in Sunday’s game.

  • Michigan easily handled Florida (13-0 lead to start the game and it was never close) after coming back to stun Kansas.

3Q: Play Ball, eh. The Indians open in Canada.

  • Any surprises on the final roster?

  • Starting rotation, bullpen, lineup

4Q: Browns sign Jason Campbell

  • They promised they would have someone compete with Weeden, so the team signed ex-Redskin, Raider and Bear Jason Campbell to a two year contract.

  • The team on Monday traded Colt McCoy to San Francisco along with our 6th round pick for SF’s 5th and 7th round pick.

  • Colt was just not suited for a down-the-field passing offense with his weak arm. So a move to sign someone else was a given.

  • Would they consider Geno Smith with #6 if he is there? Or get someone later in the draft?

  • Lots of recent veteran QB moves:

    • Matt Hasselback (TEN to Indy)

    • Ryan Kirkpatrick (BUF to TEN)

    • Matt Flynn (SEA to OAK)

    • Carson Palmer (OAK to ARIZ)

    • Kevin Kolb (ARIZ to BUF)

    • Tavaris Jackson (SEA to BUF)

  • Plus, lot of franchise QBs getting locked up long term:

    • Joe Flacco, Tom Brady, Tony Romo, Aaron Rodgers

GameTime Cleveland 153: Complete Madness

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Summary:

How are YOUR brackets after the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament? We’ll recap the zany week that has us all talking about Florida Gulf Coast and the Buckeyes last second win. Plus, the Indians get ready to break camp in Arizona and the Browns keep signing third stringers. What’s going on here? It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 1:00:29

1Q: Aaron Craft is clutch for Ohio State

  • Buckeyes took care of business and routed Iona (the Gaels) 95-70 as they should have.

  • In Rd2, the Buckeyes needed a last second 3 pointer from Aaron Craft to stave off an upset by Iowa State. OSU 78 Iowa State 75.

  • Craft was key figure late in the game, turning the ball over, committing a foul, breaking up a pass, missing a FT, drawing a questionable charge and then holding the ball in the final possession until time also expired and hitting a CLUTCH 3pt shot.

  • Cyclones came back from a 15 point deficit to take the lead. Close game after that. Lots of sharp shooting from Iowa State kept them in it. (they made 12 3pt shots).

  • Ross hit some big shots for OSU.

  • Deshaun Thomas came up limping after that loose ball scuffle late in the game. That probably kept him from taking the big shot at the end.

2Q: Brackets Go Boom

  • They don’t call it March Madness for nothing! Florida Gulf Coast shocks the world by upsetting Georgetown in Rd 1. They advance to the Sweet 16 as does #13 LaSalle.

  • The 1st weekend saw in the Rd of 64:

    • #2 Georgetown got upset by #15 Florida Gulf Coast

    • #5 Wisconsin lost to #12 Ole Miss

    • #4 Kansas State lost to #13 LaSalle

    • #3 New Mexico fell to #14 Harvard

    • #5 UNLV fell to #12 California

  • Rd of 32:

    • #1 Gonzaga lost to #9 Wichita State

  • Four Big Ten teams still alive in the Sweet 16:

    • Indiana

    • Ohio State

    • Michigan State

    • Michigan

  • Wisconsin was upset in the 1st round

  • Illinois & Minnesota lost in the Rd of 32.

3Q: Checking in on the Tribe in Spring Training

  • In games that do not matter, the Indians are 16-12 in spring ball.

  • Francona has a lot of decisions to make as he picks the club that will open the season.

  • The starting rotation will still be the sore spot of this ballclub (a former reliever, Brett Myers, is your #3 starter). Masterson and #4 starter Zach McAllister have been spotty.

  • Looks like Closer Chris Perez will be ready to go following his “injury”.

  • Opening Day is a week away (open on road in Toronto and Tampa before coming home to face the Yankees on April 8th).

4Q: The Browns keep signing reserves

  • Forget any major additions, the Browns keep signing backup/role players on the cheap.

  • They signed TE Kellen Davis and CB Chris Owens to one year deals. They also signed CB Kevin Barnes to a one year deal. Barnes was out of football last year after getting waived by Detroit. Yes, the same Lions team that had a crappy backfield didn’t even want him. So much for quality over quantity.

  • They don’t seem to want to spend all of their money this year; opting to save some for next year.

  • We weren’t even INTERESTED in a guy like Elvis Dumerville? Somehow he was good enough for the SuperBowl Champions! What about Brent Grimes? This is a starting-quality CB still out there. Are we going to let someone else sign him?

  • Owner Jimmy Haslam has said “we’re not going to be 13-3 next year. we’re trying to build something.” Inspiring, isn’t it? Doesn’t that make you want to rush out and spend your money on tickets?

  • NOTE: the Browns announced the signing of QB Jason Campbell WHILE we were recording, so we won’t comment on that move until next week’s show.

GameTime Cleveland 150: Tribe Springs Forward

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Summary:

As we all get ready to change clocks and “spring forward”, our Tribe gets busy in Goodyear trying to do the same thing. Lots of buzz about the Indians’ offseason moves mean that we get to see the new-look ballclub on the field of play. Time to talk about early impressions. And, in the NFL, will the Browns make a big splash or stay low-key as they have been hinting at all along? It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 33:57

1Q: Baerga and Hart inducted to Indians HOF

  • Former 2B Carlos Baerga and GM John Hart inducted to the Indians HOF
  • Two men that were a HUGE part of the Indians’ success in the 90’s.
  • Baerga was one of the first players signed to a long contract, which was the key strategy Hart used to get a collection of young talented players that could grow together.
  • Fan favorite, terrific hitter, inspirational team leader as the organization began to shed that streak of perennial losers.
  • Came to team in Joe Carter trade. Sandy, Carlos and Chris James came over from SD in 89.
  • Hart orchestrated a team that was ready to emerge on the scene with the opening of Jacobs Field. He infused a mix of veteran FAs (Dennis Martinez, Eddie Murray) with the core young group (Lofton, Baerga, Belle, Alomar, Nagy).
  • You see teams do this a lot now (think Tampa with Evan Longoria, for example). But it was pretty rare back then.
  • This was creativity in constructing a ballclub before the word MoneyBall ever entered anyone’s vocabulary.

2Q: Spring Training Update

  • Spring Training schedule/results
  • Chris Perez will be out 3-4 weeks (shoulder). Pestano will be first in line to fill in as closer while he recuperates.
  • Starters will be the weak link on this squad. Ubaldo not impressing early. Dice K clocked in the 80s in his action last week.
  • Ryan Raburn (31, utility infielder) making a strong move to earn a roster spot with a strong spring so far. (9 for 18, 0.500, 4HR, 9RBI)
  • Also good so far: Brantley, Swisher, Chisenhall
  • Pitching: Nick Hagadone, Scott Kazmir looking good. Still very early.

3Q: Weeden had trouble reading defenses?

  • In an interview Trent Richardson said that Weeden had trouble reading defenses and they had to simplify the offense for him. But says he really likes Weeden. Imagine if they weren’t friends?!!!
  • Organization has not had much positive to say about Weeden, despite having many opportunities. They want improvement at QB position but the reality is a franchise QB doesn’t seem to be out there right now (assuming Flacco gets the exclusive franchise tag applied or signs a new deal with BAL).
  • To be fair to Weeden, this offense was completely different than what he ran in college. So maybe he saw defenses that he never saw before? Not sure. This is an interesting – and scary – criticism of the QB.
  • But now he’s working out with Chris Weinke???

4Q: NFL Free Agency Next Week

  • Free agents can officially sign on March 12th
  • Browns “say” they won’t make a big splash.
  • If they do, that would be OK with fans.
  • Unrealistic to think WR Mike Wallace would sign here.
  • Ex-Cards DB William Gay signed with PITT instead of possibly reuniting with DC Ray Horton and said “That’s Cleveland. I don’t know if I could have handled that.”
  • Ravens LB Paul Kruger?
  • A Tight End for Chud? Ravens will probably slap RFA tag on Dennis Pitta.
