GameTime Cleveland 159: Indians Are Rolling

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Summary:

The Indians are your AL Central leaders. They swept the Mariners in a 4 game series and won three of those games in walk-off fashion. Now THAT’s style! We’ve got plenty of Tribe talk plus some NBA and NFL news, too. It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 37:48

1Q: Indians are rolling now

  • We kept giving Seattle opportunities to win on Monday, but the Mariners kept returning the favor. Perez gave up a HR in the 9th AGAIN to put Seattle up before we tied it up when they could not make a routine put out at 1B in our half of the inning.

  • Justin Smoak hit a HR in the top of the 10th but we got two on for Gomes in our turn before he ended it with his walk-off HR.

  • Masterson was dominant in the 6-0 win on Sunday against Felix Hernandez, striking out 11 in seven innings.

  • This time it was Brantley’s turn to drive in some runs. Michael Bourn’s speed on the bases sets the table for a lot of this action. Also a lot of clutch 2-out hitting, especially in that 2nd inning.

2Q: Are they the Kardiac Kids?

  • Friday and Saturday featured walk-off wins, one in extra innings Friday when Jason Kipnis hit a 3R HR to end it. Ubaldo struck out nine in 5 innings but the bullpen could not hold the lead.

  • Saturday we won 5-4 in the bottom of the 9th after Closer Chris Perez gave up TWO HOME RUNS with two outs in the top of the 9th to allow Seattle to tie it. This wasted a solid pitching performance from Zach McAllister. Reynolds plated Kipnis with the bases full to win it when Seattle catcher Jesus Montero’s foot was came off home plate.

3Q: NBA Final Four

  • San Antonio dominated Memphis in Gm1 of the Western Conference Finals. Either of these teams should give Miami some problems (we hope). Oklahoma City was too much of a finesse team (even when healthy) to stop the Heat, as we saw last year. Same with Golden State.

  • Miami has to wait until Wednesday to face Indiana in the Eastern Finals. The Pacers will play physical and tough defense but they don’t have enough offense to seriously challenge Miami. Right?

4Q: Lottery talk

  • Neither of us won the big PowerBall lotto. Did you?

  • The NBA Draft Lottery is Tuesday night. The Cavs will pick between #1 and #6, depending on the ping pong ball bounces.

  • The NFL is apparently ready to make themselves a year-round thing. They want to move the NFL Draft from April to May, so free agency can dominate the month of April.

  • They also want to move the scouting combine into March, at the start of the new league year.

Summary:

The Browns introduce their new Defensive Coordinator. The fans aren’t the only ones nervous about the changes he will bring to town. And, it’s SuperBowl week. After all of the hype leading up to the game is over, will we see some good football? The defenses are elite but are both offenses the best in the game? It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 46:25

1Q: Browns DC Ray Horton Introduced

  • He thinks the Browns don’t need to overhaul the roster to play his defense.
  • Horton wants “big guys that can run and little guys that can hit”. Get used to hearing this phrase.
  • Likes Billy Winn, Ahtyba Rubin, TJ Ward, among others.
  • Some guys, like Jabaal Sheard and D’Qwell Jackson, are a little nervous about switching to a 3-4.
  • Horton will model us after the Steelers defense, which is always attacking, blitzing and trying to take away what you do best as an offense. He learned from Dick LeBeau.

2Q: SuperBowl 47 Matchup

  • Ravens versus 49ers
  • Flacco versus Kaepernick
  • John (fired OC in December) versus Jim (replaced starting QB mid-season)

3Q: SuperBowl Controversy

  • Did Ray Lewis use banned substances to speed his recovery and make it back in time for the playoffs?
  • Randy Moss thinks he is the best receiver of all time. Jerry Rice, and the rest of the world, beg to differ.
  • Who has the better RBs? Who has the better WRs? Who will make the biggest impact that decides the outcome of this game?

4Q: SuperBowl Picks

  • What is the point spread?
  • What does the Nation think wins the game?
  • What do we think?
  • Will Alicia Keys sing the National Anthem in less than/greater than 2 mins 15 seconds? There’s a prop bet for that and many other things.
  • What color Gatorade will be used to douse the winning Coach?
  • The most popular prop bet of all: heads or tails?
  • Will the Halftime show stink? Will Beyonce lip sync again?

GameTime Cleveland 134: Oh for September

The Browns went zero for September following a Thursday night loss to Baltimore. The Indians made a managerial change and we’ll talk about the leading candidates to replace Manny Acta. Plus, the Buckeyes pickup a win in a defensive battle against Michigan State. It’s GameTime!

1Q: Manny Acta fired

  • Why fire him with six games to go?
  • Sandy Alomar Jr named interim manager. Will he get the permanent job for next year?
  • Terry Francona and Mike Hargrove have thrown their hats into the ring, too.

2Q: Browns fall to Ravens 23-16

  • It was a closer game than most expected.
  • Weeden looked OK, but his WRs are still dropping passes.
  • Why are we always trailing early?

3Q: Phil Dawson is money for the Browns

  • Phil Dawson is M-O-N-E-Y. Three FGs in the rain from long distances (50, 51 and 52 yards).
  • Browns D played pretty well considering it was their third game without Joe Haden.
  • Billy Winn played great on the D line. Craig Robertson played terrific at LB.
  • Boldin kept making critical catches for the Ravens, showing us how dumb we were when we ignored him in FA a few years ago being content with what we had. We don’t have any WRs that are difference makers.

4Q: Buckeyes hold off the Spartans

  • Urban got his first conference win as the Buckeyes hung on to beat Michigan State 17-16.
  • Good defense for a change.
  • Looks like we’ll have to do it without RB Jordan Hall, who injured his knee vs MSU. Hall had missed games earlier this yr due to foot injury.

GameTime Cleveland 133: Can’t Pay The Bills

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

The Browns looked out of it against the Bills and fell to 0-3 on the year. Will it get any better with a short week to prepare for the Ravens? Will we see the regular NFL referees for this game or, perhaps, this weekend? And what should we expect as the Buckeyes open up conference play this Saturday in a year when the entire BigTen seems to be having a down year? We’ve got plenty to debate. It’s GameTime!

1Q: Browns Fall Again at Home

  • Browns fall to Buffalo 24-14.
  • Two 3 and outs by the offense with a home crowd behind them was not a great way to get things going.
  • Defense gave up two TD scores on Buffalo’s drives to put the team in a big early hole.
  • Secondary continues to show how weak (and young) we are back there.
  • No coincidence that Weeden plays well when T-Rich rushes well. QBs need the threat of a ground game otherwise defenses tee off on them.
  • Browns rushed for 33 YARDS the ENTIRE GAME!
  • Weeden still has not shown any kind of touch on deep passes.
  • Richardson looked like he did against the Eagles, getting few yards with small holes behind an over-rated offensive line.

2Q: More Browns but less Greg Little please

  • Greg Little getting a lot of criticism for his Usain Bolt moves after getting 1st down catches. He may get benched this week.
  • Who would you start at WR? Mike likes Travis Benjamin and Josh Gordan with Jordan Cameron at TE (let’s let the young guys develop together). Let Norwood and Cribbs be #3 and #4.
  • What will the Browns do against Baltimore on Thursday night? Will it be an ugly game on national TV?

3Q: The Replacement Refs are an embarrassment

  • react to the officiating (call at end of GB/SEA game on MNF)
  • missed Pass Interference in end zone, bad calls on roughing QB and Defensive PI that kept the final drive alive.
  • Matt Schaub lost part of his ear in a rough hit. Darrius Heyward-Bay knocked out in PIT/OAK game.
  • Coaches and players critical (Clay Matthews tweeted Goodell’s phone number, Belichick grabbed ref after game, etc)

4Q: Are the Buckeyes ready for BigTen play?

  • Buckeyes beat UAB 29-15
  • sounding like a broken record. defense bad. Miller rushes us to victory.
  • Conference play is here. What will be in store?
  • Michigan State up first as the Buckeyes travel to Lansing.

GameTime Cleveland 130: AFC Preview

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

The NFL is back this week. It’s Browns and Eagles down at the Lakefront! Woof, woof, woof! We’re wrapping up our preview of the NFL by taking a closer look at the teams from the American Football Conference. Andrew Luck, Peyton in Denver, Tebow is a Jet. The Patriots. And of course, the AFC North. Will T-Rich, BW3 and company lift the Browns to new heights?  It’s GameTime!

note: we recorded this episode before the Browns’ cuts were announced.

Q1: AFC East

  • Buffalo, Miami, New England and NY Jets.
  • Buffalo made a splash by signing Mario Williams from the Texans. But after their good start in 2011, they fell. HARD. Can they really compete in a division that Tom Brady owns and that Rex Ryan wants to own?
  • Ryan Tannehill is the choice in Miami. After Peyton Manning. And Matt Flynn. And anyone else that was available. The Dolphins were so desperate at WR that they took a shot at Chad Johnson. They need more time to rebuild in South Beach. Maybe they should call LeBron.
  • Is Rex Ryan a mad scientist or is he just mad? We’ll find out this year with the combo of Sanchez and Tebow taking snaps for the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets.
  • Tom Brady would probably love to have five TEs on the field if he could. Who knows, Belichick could probably figure out a way to pull that off and still win. This is the Patriots division again, right?

Q2: AFC West

  • Denver, Kansas City, Oakland and San Diego.
  • This was a weak division last year. How weak? The Broncos won it with Tim Tebow at the helm!
  • That means the Broncos had to be a pretty good team in spite of their QB. So a healthy Peyton Manning ought to make them Division Champions again in 2012, right?
  • Kansas City should have a running game like Mack and Byner with Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis in the backfield. If they are both healthy.
  • The Raiders are relying on Carson Palmer and yet another new coach. Can Darren McFadden stay healthy?
  • We’re not picking the Chargers any more. We don’t care how awesome those powder blue jerseys with the white helmets look. They are the AFC version of the Cowboys. Underachievers.

Q3: AFC South

  • Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Tennessee
  • This conference should belong to the Texans for a few years. Look how far they got last year without Mario Williams and Matt Shaub! A healthy QB should make a big difference in 2012.
  • Andrew Luck has some talent around him. But it should take a few years for their rebuild to be complete.
  • Tennessee will go with Jake Locker. As long as he wins. They can always call on the bullpen with Hasselback. But what happened to Chris Johnson? Oh yeah, he got paid!
  • Jacksonville is a mess. Heck, they are calling London home for one game every year for the next four. Blaine Gabbert? Really?

Q4: AFC North

  • Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
  • The Ravens will have to do without Defensive Player of the Year Terrelle Suggs. And everyone else is a year older. It sure would help them if Joe Flacco could step it up and let the offense win some games for a change.
  • Will the Bengals fall back a little after nice rookie seasons from Dalton and AJ Green? It seemed like the League caught up to them towards the end of the year. We’ll see if they can step it up or follow the paths that KC and Tampa took after making the playoffs two years ago.
  • Pat Shurmur needs to win a lot this year to stay on as Head Coach. He’s going to have to do so with a bunch of rookies on offense. That’s not a good recipe for success. But if Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden and Josh Gordon are something special, then new Owner Jimmy Haslam just might have something to build a winner with.
  • Pittsburgh has some injuries to deal with. They are turning to two rookies on the O Line to keep Big Ben healthy. That kind of gamble usually is reserved for Vegas. But the Steelers organization usually knows things that others don’t. So we’ll see if this works. We’re sure not about to call them old again. But that has to be true one of these years, right?
We’ll make our post-season picks at the end of the show. There are some surprises, for sure.
